- Plays an Important Role in Our Own and Our Allies’ Security and Preparedness
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries is taking steps to strengthen the role of industry in national security and preparedness — and has therefore assigned a new task to Prosess21 and the Research Council of Norway.
This was announced on the Norwegian government’s website.
The initiative involves launching a mapping of strategic and critical value chains, giving Prosess21 and the Research Council the mandate to conduct a comprehensive assessment of Norwegian industry’s role in these strategic and critical chains. The work will be aligned with similar initiatives in the EU and other relevant countries.
A Key Player in Several Value Chains
-Norwegian industry plays an important role in several value chains that are critical to both our own and our allies’ security and preparedness. Through this mapping, we will gain a better overview of the interconnections Norwegian industry is part of — and how its capacity, competence, and innovative strength contribute to strategic international value chains, said Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth to Regjeringen.no.
A Holistic View of Norwegian Industry
-In Prosess21, we have already established an expert group on critical raw materials, and we look forward to contributing our insight and broad network to this important work. To succeed, we must view Norwegian industry from a holistic perspective — spanning from the mineral and process industries to manufacturing and advanced value chains. We look forward to collaborating with other key actors in these value chains. We are excited to begin this work together with the Research Council’s minerals group, said Lars Petter Maltby, Director of Prosess21.
He emphasized that the mapping should be based on the EU’s list of critical and strategic raw materials and NATO’s list of defense-critical materials, but should also include materials where Norway holds a particularly critical and strategic position.
The steering committee of Prosess21 looks forward to integrating this effort into a broader strategic framework, and the Prosess21 expert group on critical raw materials will contribute its expertise throughout the process.
